Deductions and Recordkeeping for Direct Sales Professionals

What is deductible? How do you keep track of it and what records do you need to keep?  Participants will learn how to substantiate business income and deductions, including how to keep business and non-business transactions separate, and what documentation is required for business deductions.  Specific areas with extra requirements will also be covered, including travel, meals, entertainment, vehicle expenses, and home office expenses.  Practical record-keeping tips will be discussed.

Joseph Bearden is an owner of Mason, Bearden & Diehl, which provides accounting and tax services to hundreds of local businesses in North Alabama.  Joseph is an Enrolled Agent with authority to practice before the Internal Revenue Service.  His goal is to help clients be responsible with their money by sending less of it to the government.

Jenny Johnson currently works as an Independent Chocolatier and Manager with Dove® Chocolate Discoveries™. 

Jenny was the number 1 Chocolatier in the country for both personal sales and chocolate tasting parties in 2012 and a top 10 recruiter.  She is currently serving on the company’s Advisory for a second term. 

She was a 2010 Start-Up of the Year Finalist with the Madison Chamber of Commerce.

She has represented the company in numerous radio and television interviews across the country.  Her most exciting accomplishment was an appearance on the Food Network Show, Unwrapped.

Christy Hawkins Dunn began her Mary Kay business while climbing the corporate ladder of one of our nation’s largest banks. She saw the Mary Kay opportunity as a way to make life-long friends and as a way to replace her executive income while working from home. While working 50 to 60 hours a week she built her Dream Team unit and debuted as a Sales Director just 16 months after joining the company.  She retired from corporate America soon after to pursue her Mary Kay career full time.  Christy and her Dream Team have earned the use of 4 free cars and they are currently in the Chevy Equinox. They are currently on target to finish the Prestigious Pink Cadillac by June 30, 2013.  She has been in the National Court of Sales once.  Two times she has earned the National Court of Sharing. Her goal is to build her Dream Team to a National Area which will allow her husband, Frank to experience early retirement.  Christy’s passion is teaching other women how to enjoy a life of independence!

Susan Voiers is a former leader in the direct sales industry.  She recruited and developed a team of over 1000 independent consultants across the country and earned one of the top positions in a well-known direct sales company.  Afterwards she turned her talents to providing resources for direct sales and multi-level representatives.  This led her to accept the position as the Southeaster Director of a national non-profit organization.  While there she directed 22 expos across 5 states for small businesses and work from home opportunities.     

Her experiences in owning her own businesses in marketing and advertising and the direct sales industry lead her to launch the TN Valley Barter Exchange, the TN Valley Grapevine and the TN Valley Business Network.  The three divisions work synergistically to provide resources for small and work from home businesses
